A Beautiful Fall Day and Some Early Lessons

A very nice day here in Juneau with some sunshine but a bit cool.  We did more packing and Pamela sent a note out to folks with the Blog link and some early lessons learned.  I am adding them to the end of this post for those of you who did not get the message.  Please let us know if you have any troubles accessing the Blog and leave a comment if you wish.

Pamela's Lessons Learned So Far:

1. Less is Better - Thanks to a Neil's dad and my cousin Gordon who have traveled like this before, we keep reminded ourselves there are stores all along the route, so we don't have to take one of everything.

2. Getting Rid of Mail - go to www.catalogchoice.org and you can eliminate unwanted catalogs and 3rd party offers. We are at -80 and counting that we have eliminated, most never ordered from. So far have saved 6 trees and 2 tons (wow!) of landfill waste.

3. Freezer not for Ice - use the freezer for the salmon and halibut caught this summer and buy a small independent portable icemaker. Thanks Gordon for the great idea of a Koldfront.

4. One Recipe book - gathered all our favorite recipes, scanned them and created a hardback Creative Memories published book. It Was a Cold and Windy Night!

Heavy winds and rain here in Juneau, making us glad that we will be leaving Juneau in less than two weeks for the winter.  Long term forecast is for a colder and snowier winter, and we will just have to keep track of that from Arizona and New Mexico.  This is our first attempt at "blogging" so let us know what you think (no--really!).  We will be posting photos and maps and stuff as we learn what the heck we are doing.

Getting Ready for Our Travels South

Neil and Pamela are working to determine what we think that we will need for the next four months in our new RV. We bought a 34-foot Keystone Cougar 327RES fifth wheel trailer in Oregon in mid October and plan to leave Juneau on November 11th on the Alaska State Ferry Kennicott to Prince Rupert, BC. We think that the pickup will be plenty full when we leave here.

We have a good friend house sitting for us in Juneau, and we are looking forward to traveling to California, Arizona, and New Mexico and visiting friends and relatives and seeing new sites at a slow pace.
