We have had a wonderful week of nice, dry weather and a great visit by friends Jim and Elaine from Juneau, Alaska. We were able to get some nice side trips done, as well as getting some house projects done. Pamela was even able to win some card games, just to keep us on our toes.

On Monday, we traveled over to McMinnville to look at the aviation and space museums at the Evergreen complex. Along the way, we stopped at a farmers market and picked up apples, corn, and some other veggies. The corn was very sweet and a great treat.

We spent several hours at the aviation museum touring the Howard Hughes "Spruce Goose", a B-17D bomber, and several other historic aircraft before we got lunch and some wine that they grow on the property. We took so much time in the aviation museum that we barely had time to go across the parking lot to see the space museum. Both were pretty impressive, and are places we will go back to see again.

On Tuesday, Jim and Neil worked on repairing some broken fence posts with a fence post bracket that is called SturD Fence. They braced the fence back up to level, and then dug holes to insert the brackets and filled the holes with QuikCrete. The result is an upright fence without having to replace the posts or fence itself.

They also were able to install the heavy duty angle iron on top of the wisteria pergola on the back deck. They were able to notch the angle iron and drill holes for the installation of lag screws. It really did a great job of strengthening the cedar 4 x 4 beam and will make it last until it is time to replace the deck in some future year. It was great to have more help to complete these two projects.

Wednesday was a day to do the Mount Hood Loop; by going up the Columbia River Gorge and up and over Mount Hood. Part of the historic Columbia River Highway is closed for repairs, so we did not get to Vista House, but did stop at Multnomah Falls and went on into Hood River for a picnic along the Columbia. The weather all week has been fantastic, with temperatures in the 70's. A far cry from what Jim and Elaine would experience in Juneau!
On the way up Mount Hood, we stopped at several fruit stands as part of the "Fruit Loop", picking up things like honey, wine, apples, and jam. As a result, Jim and Elaine will be taking a couple of fish boxes north with them to await a refill with fish some summer.
We drove up to Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood on the Mount Hood National Forest and toured the historic lodge and had a light dinner at the bar, watching sunset on the mountain. It was a great day.

On Thursday we drove into Portland and visited the Japanese Garden, had dinner at Jake's Crawfish House, and visited Powell's Books. Another full day for us and our guests. We have had a great week doing neat things, but we are looking forward to resting up from all of the activities!

On the way out to McMinnville, we found out what happens when you have a man with a welder and too much time on his hands. Shown below is one of the most unique RV's we have ever seen. It has a VW microbus on top, with a part of a VW beetle welded on behind it.

All is well here, with great fall weather projected to last for at least another week. We will be working on getting our garden ready for winter and finishing off some of those projects we have not got to yet this year.
